Devils Garden Roundup Underway

You are here

The Forest Service has begun the roundup and removal of wild horses from California's largest wild horse herd. The Service will take the horses to the BLM's Litchfield Corrals where they will be prepared and put up for adoption. Although legally the Forest Service could sell the horses at a slaughter auction, it has committed to returning any horses who are not adopted to the range.

Meanwhile our legal action to challenge the Forest Service Decision to zero out the middle section of this territory (essentially turning the public lands to private ranchers) continues with upcoming oral arguments in the US Court of Appeals in Washington DC. If allowed to stand, the action would cleave the Devils Garden wild horse population into two non-intermingling herds, neither of which would be genetically viable at the agency's desired "appropriate" management levels.
