AWHC Volunteers Attend AZ Burro Adoption Event

On December 8th, the Florence BLM Wild Horse & Burro adoption event took place at the Department of Corrections in Florence, Arizona. Inmates, with proper clearance, care for and handle wild horses and burros at this facility. Five of those inmates showcased the talents of three gentled wild horses and three tamed burros in front of 25 potential adopters.


Tonto National Forest Successfully Defends Humane Treatment of Wild Horses While Apache Sitgreaves National Forest Blatantly Disregards It

While the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest (ASNF) was busy trucking 45 Alpine wild horses to a Texas kill pen, the Tonto National Forest (TNF) held its ground in defending the Salt River wild horses from a lawsuit aimed at overturning the humane management program created under Arizona State law. The program is implemented by the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group (SRWHMG) in partnership with the AZ Department of Agriculture. It includes a humane fertility control program that is successfully reducing the size of the population without removals.

As you might remember, Huck and Puck, AWHC’s wild burro ambassadors, were pulled from their range in Nevada in one of the BLM’s helicopter roundups, adopted through the Adoption Incentive Program, and flipped at an infamous kill pen in Oklahoma soon afterward. From there their luck changed, however, and they were saved by a rescue and fostered in Wyoming. Then it was on to our home in Worthington, Massachusetts.
