Congress Bans Forest Service from Selling Wild Horses from Slaughter

New Law Protects Wild Horses in California’s Modoc National Forest and Across the West

WASHINGTON, DC (December 19, 2019)... Today, Congress passed the Fiscal Year 2020 “minibus” spending bill that prohibits the U.S. Forest Service from destroying healthy wild horses and burros and selling them for slaughter.

On October 23, 2019, AWHC organized a highly successful press conference in Reno to counter the messaging of an anti-wild horse propaganda film showing later that evening. The film, Horse Rich Dirt Poor, blames wild horses for destroying BLM lands in the West, without ever mentioning the far greater impacts of livestock grazing or the fact that wild horses are on just 12 percent of the public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

No Mention of Livestock at BLM Wild Horse & Burro Advisory Board Meeting but Lots of Bull

Not surprisingly, this fall’s BLM Wild Horse & Burro Advisory Board (AB) meeting, held in Washington, D.C. on October 29-31, continued the agency’s assault on America’s wild herds.  According to board members, wild horses continue to be the sole cause of range land destruction and all the “tools in the toolbox” need to be utilized, including massive roundup and sterilization, in order to bring about a solution – the near extinction of wild horses and burros.

The BLM Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board is meeting on July 9 -11 in Boise, Idaho.  In recent years, the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program has gone from bad to worse, and the special interest agenda of achieving the virtual extinction of wild free-roaming horses and burros for the benefit of subsidized livestock grazing has steadily gained ground. 


Report: Reno, Nevada Wild Horse Summit

(June 18, 2019) In 2017, the Wildlife Society and its National Wild Horse and Burro Rangeland Management Coalition, representing  livestock and hunting interests including the NRA and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, organized a summit on wild horse management in Salt Lake City. Specifically excluded from the 3-day meeting were any individuals or organizations representing a pro-wild horse, anti-horse slaughter point of view.
