Fed'l Court Lifts TRO on Sale of Wild Horses

Reno, NV (August 21, 20013) Today in U.S. District Court in Reno, Judge Miranda Du lifted a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) barring the sale of unbranded wild horses captured by the Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Tribe under an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service.

A federal court judge in Reno, NV has granted a coalition of wild horse advocacy and conservation groups a Temporary Restraining Order to block the sale of unbranded horses at a slaughter auction tomorrow in Fallon, Nevada. The groups sued to stop the sale of unbranded horses who were captured last weekend on public and tribal lands in northern Nevada, alleging that unbranded horses were likely federally-protected wild horses originating from the nearby Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Little Owyhee Herd Management Area.

Late yesterday, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) notified a coalition of wild horse advocacy and conservation groups that it was “issuing a stop order” to helicopter wranglers hired to roundup hundreds of wild horses on USFS, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and tribal lands on the Ft. McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Reservation on the Nevada/Oregon Border and transport them to a slaughter auction.

Winnemucca, NV (August 8, 2013) ... Yesterday, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, informed the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC), a national coalition, that it was reneging on its previous commitment to provide public observation of the taxpayer-funded helicopter roundup of wild horses on public lands in the Humboldt Toiyable National Forest. The capture operation is set to begin tomorrow, Friday, August 9, 2013, at 5 a.m., and the wild horses that are rounded up are scheduled to go to slaughter auction the following week. Read more

USDA Shady Plan to Round Up Wild Horses for Slaughter Revealed

Lompoc, CA (August 7, 2013)....The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC), a national coalition, today blasted the U.S. Forest Service (FS), a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for its plan to roundup 750-1000 wild horses from federal and tribal Lands in northern Nevada and turn them over to the tribes to sell for slaughter. The plan will proceed despite the stated opposition of the Obama Administration and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to the practice of horse slaughter.
