It’s 2012, and a wild mare the locals call Sandy wanders onto property owned by a Nevada developer. She's with her family, and they're just looking for some sweet grass to eat.
The developer calls the Nevada Department of Agriculture – which bait-traps these majestic and innocent horses and sends them to the slaughter auction. Wild horse advocates are forced to outbid kill buyers to save Sandy, her family, and dozens more like them.
Scenes like this were everyday occurrences when we started our work five years ago – but the difference today is stunning. We’ve shined a light on this cruelty, and signed Cooperative Agreements with the State of Nevada for rescue and humane on-the-range management of the Virginia Range horses. Our movement stood up to the slaughter lobby and showed everyone there is a better way forward. Our successful humane birth control program creates a model for the entire nation.
The Bureau of Land Management claims humane, sustainable wild horse management across large areas with a large number of horses isn’t possible. They say roundups and mass slaughters are necessary. But we’ve proved them wrong. We’ve built a successful public-private partnership that provides humane birth control in Nevada and serves as a template for the country.
Now, the Nevada Board of Agriculture has unilaterally and illegally ended our cooperative agreement, threatening this vital program. The slaughter lobby is reasserting itself and the Agriculture Department is going along.
