A Glance at September Roundups

As the roundups that began in July wind down, we want to give you a look at what herds are next on the chopping block for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service. 

Frisco Herd Management Area, Utah

Beginning on or about August 29, the BLM Cedar City Field Office will begin a roundup and removal of the wild horses from the Frisco HMA, west of Milford, Utah. The agency's stated goal is to remove approximately 100 wild horses from the 60,000-acre public lands area. 

South Steens HMA, Oregon

  • Cost of Contract: $190,000

Beginning on or about September 10, the BLM Burns District will begin a roundup and removal of the wild horses from the South Steens HMA, in Oregon. The agency plans to round up approximately 400 wild horses from the more than 130,000-acre public lands area, permanently remove approximately 350 and treat approximately 40 mares with fertility control. 

Calico Complex, Nevada

Beginning on or about September 10, the BLM Black Rock Field Office in Nevada will begin a roundup and removal of the wild horses that reside within the Calico Mountains Complex which includes the Black Rock Range, Calico Mountains, Granite Range, McGee Mountain, and Warm Springs Canyon Herd Management Areas. The agency plans to round up approximately 1,556 wild horses from the 584,000-acre land area, permanently remove approximately 1,445, and treat approximately 40 mares with fertility control.

Devil’s Garden Wild Horse Territory, California

Beginning on or about September 12, the Modoc National Forest will begin the roundup and removal of the wild horses from the Devil’s Garden Wild Horse Territory outside of Alturas California. The Forest Service aims to remove approximately 500 wild horses from the Territory.
