NDA Signs Agreement for Fertility Control of Virginia Range Horses

April 9, 2019

The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) said they and the American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC) signed a non-exclusive agreement for fertility control for the Virginia Range feral/estray horse population on Tuesday.

The new agreement leaves room for additional cooperative agreements and the NDA said they will continue to address public safety concerns as-needed at (775) 353-3709.

The Virginia Range area includes US-395 to Highway 95A, and I-80 to Highway 50.

The AWHC said certified darters will begin working to deliver the PZP immunocontraceptive vaccine to wild horses in Innovation Park in Storey County this week.

The NDA says Nevada is a "fence out" state, meaning if landowners do not want livestock on their property, they must construct a legal fence in accordance with the law (NRS Chapter 569.431).

The NDA wants to remind drivers to be alert and aware of horses crossing roadways in search of feed and water sources, and to obey all traffic laws and posted speed limits in their areas.
